2001 Hands of Compassion Award
Childhelp USA
Mark Victor Hansen & Patty Hansen were honored with the Hands of Compassion Award for their contribution through Chicken
Soup for the Kid’s Soul, which generated more than $31,000 for Childhelp programs that help severely abused and neglected
children.
Additional 2001 honorees included Merv Griffin and Kathleen Turner

2000 Horatio Alger Award
Horatio Alger Association of Distinguished Americans, Inc.
Each year, this association honors American leaders who personify the virtues and principles
inherent in the success stories written by nineteenth century American author Horatio Alger, Jr.
As an award winner, Mr. Hansen's extraordinary life achievements will stand as a powerful
example that the free enterprise system still offers opportunity to all.
Since 1947, The Horatio Alger Association of Distinguished Americans has been dedicated to
honoring the accomplishments and achievements of outstanding individuals in our society who
have succeeded in the face of adversity, and to encourage young people to pursue their dreams
with determination and perseverance. The Association brings the "Horatio Alger Heroes" of today
together with those of tomorrow by bestowing the Horatio Alger Award annually, hosting career,
public service, and community service seminars; sponsoring free-enterprise conferences, awarding
more than $1,000,000 in college scholarships, and providing an internship and job placement
program.

2000 Outstanding Business Leader of the Year
Northwood University
Many of Northwood's career curriculums are developed in response to the needs of business and
industry. Active, senior executives become instructors to keep students abreast of developments
and trends in the national and international economy. Put in simple terms, Northwood is a
private, tax-exempt, independent, co-educational, management-oriented college actively allied
to business and the arts.
The Outstanding Business Leader Award criteria include contribution of the philosophy of private
enterprise, support of the integration of business and the arts, contribution to education,
economic innovation, creative marketing ideas, community involvement, religious leadership,
philanthropic contributions, as well as business success.

1999 Humanitarian of the Year
National Conference for Community and Justice
NCCJ was founded in 1927 as The National Conference of Christian and Jews is a human relation
organization dedicated to fighting bias, bigotry and racism in America. NCCJ promotes
understanding and respect among all races, religions and cultures though advocacy, conflict
resolution and education.

1995 Book of the Year Award (ABBY)
American Booksellers Association (ABA)
American Booksellers Association is a not-for-profit trade organization devoted to the needs of
its core members-independently owned bookstores with storefront locations. The ABA actively
supports free speech, literacy, and programs that encourage children to read.
Awards are given each year to the "hidden treasures" in the adult and children's book
categories that ABA bookstore members most enjoyed recommending to their customers. Over
20,000 bookstores nominate 3 titles out of the thousands of books released each year.

Freedoms Foundation is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to effectively communicating to
young people the principles upon which our nation was founded, and the balance of rights and
responsibilities of citizens in today's increasingly diverse society.
The George Washington Honor Medal is presented for outstanding achievement over a period of
years, reflecting the high ideas of human dignity and fundamental principals of a free society.
Considered the Foundation's highest award.

National Speakers Association
The National Speakers Association (NSA) is the professional organization for experts who speak
for a living. Its members include experts who are trainers, educators, humorists, motivators,
consultants and authors. Speakers bring their own expertise, and NSA helps them build business
skills and platform performance.
Certified Speaking Professionals are individuals who have proven extensive experience as a
professional speaker. They are educated, committed and creative professionals who are considered
masters in the industry. The National Speakers Association developed this certification program
to recognize those individuals who have taken significant time, effort and dedication to develop
a successful professional speaking career. This designation is held by less than 7% of the
association's membership.
